Linked In -- Never heard of it!?!

I'm surprised how often I hear that comment in business meetings. Everyone's heard of Facebook, so why is LinkedIn not taking off?

  • Maybe because it's not so visual?

  • Maybe because it's hard to figure out how to use it to your advantage. With millions of members there seems like there should be a lot of potential to find and develop relationships, but I find it difficult to just "cold call" a "friend" to make the connection.
  • Maybe I should read Jason Alba's new book I'm on LinkedIn, Now What? that "explains the different benefits of the system and recommends best practices to get the most out of LinkedIn."

14 Million LinkedIn Members

14% 1. Information Technology and Services
11% 2. Computer Software
6% 3. Telecommunications
5% 4. Marketing and Advertising
4% 5. Management Consulting

UPDATE: Jason Alba contacted me on Monday morning with a phone call! Now how's that for being linked in! He offered three ways to learn more: For your friends and audience, they can purchase the hard copy either at the publisher site or Amazon but only get the ebook at the publisher site. And I have a cool blog that supports the book (links, follow-ups, etc.) here: http://www.ImOnLinkedInNowWhat.com.
Thanks Jason

Chris,
I'm glad you're plugging LinkedIn. I just joined a couple of months ago, and it's been a huge aid in building my online presence and re-establishing contacts that I'd long ago forgotten. Just today, I heard from a colleague that I haven't talked to in nearly two decades. Turns out she's in the same line of business as I am, only she's based in Kentucky. It was great hearing from her, and now we might be able to help one another out. It wouldn't have happened, though, without LinkedIn.
