Am I the Only One Who Doesn't Like Flash?
Maybe I like being in control when I go to a web site. I don't like that I can't click on what I want to while the intro Powerpoint -esk words slide across the screen or photos appear. Maybe I don't like it because I don't have any idea how long this little movie thing is going to take.
When I go to a website, I want to be able to click on and see what I want, when I want it.
In designing websites for clients, I try to discourage them from taking the driver's wheel away from their readers by installing flash and encourage them to leave the reader in control. I think it's just good marketing. "Have it your way" to borrow a very old tag line phrase.
In my mind, if you want to have flash on a website, at least have a pause button and a skip link so someone can get away from it quickly or not have to watch the whole routine to get the info they're looking for. Okay, I'm a control freak.
Reading Mack Collier's post about Music Marketing Madness today inspired my control rant with his links to both Jessica (who I always thought was Ben) and CK.

I agree with your complaints about much of the use of Flash but don't blame Flash. It is quite possible to design sites that make good use of Flash without confusing or over controlling the user. It is forcing the user through some long, interesting once but then not, series of images and/or text that is the real problem and, while Flash makes this easy to do, it does not make it necessary nor is it the only way to do that sort of thing. Literally thousand of sites crowd themselves with images and text that most users (at least regular ones) have no interest in and that quickly become obstacles to getting what they are really after. KISS is a rule that is hard to overuse.
No you are not alone.
I think most everyone hates Flash used this way, except for Web designers and the people they talk into having annoying Flash intros on their sites!
As Dan says, there are plenty of legit uses of Flash. This isn't one of them!
