SEO... going WAY beyond Google

Often when I talk to clients about optimizing their web site so it comes up high in search engines, the conversation spirals down into talking about one search site for optimization. Google.

Yes, it does seem like everything is Google driven these days. But there are lots of other sites than can really drive traffic that really don't have anything to do with Google, but will result in high standings in Google.

Okay. Maybe that's confusing.

What about this blog. Do you think that posting to a blog and posting on other blogs will help SEO standings for the sites that I link to in this blog. You Betcha!!

Send me a comment and ask me to link to your site in this blog.

Then, we'll search these terms: Branding {your site name or brand name}
I think you'll be surprised. Because this blog has a 5 in Google, it helps to raise other sites awareness in the search engines.

And wow. If your site is mentioned on some of the TOP blogs... well, hey. You've made it.

Today this site is in the 4,400 range out of 71,000,000 blogs. So the top 1% of the top 1%. or better. For a "Branding & Marketing" search in google blog search, it comes up in the top consistently. Just Branding. Yep. Just marketing... well, there's a lot of competition there!!

Here's an interesting opinion about viral marketing and SEO using other Web2.0 community sites.

So you're saying that if I talk about our Open Source Ruby on Rails CRM | CMS here and I have links back to my site in the keywords? That it will help me place well for those keywords? ;)

So if I was trying to optimize my site to come up first when you searched for the best web developers in the world on google (or any other engines?) that it would help move me up the rankings faster than by posting this same content on a site that is ranked a PR1 (like my darn blog :)

I get it now :) Maybe this little exercise will help some other people understand how back linking using your keywords is the best SEO out there (and while it takes time... it doesn't require some $1200/Month firm to do it for you)

True, it does take time.

Picking "best web developers in the world" is a pretty generic phrase but it appears you've been working it!

Your website comes up #2 in Google, #3 in Google Blog Search, #1 in Yahoo, ? in MSN for this phrase. How long have you been working on it??

Actually Chris, I've really only been working it for a couple of weeks.

I noticed in my analytics that I had gotten a couple of organic hits from it. I'd posted us in ning.com as that (best web developers in the world) and it started to drive traffic.

I thought it would be a cool little exercise to see if i could get to number 1 with it (almost there).

Of course it's not exactly a highly competitive phrase, but still a fun little bit of Search Engine Manipulation to show off with.

Thanks for playing along :)

Just an update Chris :)

Couldn't help singing "we are the champions" when I saw this...

we're now #1 on google for Best web developers in the world

Check it out on Google.

Now as you said that's a pretty generic phrase (but I'll take it) now we're going to start working on Best web developers (on page 8 right now... what do you think? 1 month?)

Thought I'd keep you posted :)
